~ Flowers of Shiraz ~
On Rajnigandha or Tuberose
Shiraz, the cultural city of Iran, is synomymous with flowers, poetry and wine.
To spread the fragrnace of flowers and share literary references to 'flowers'
with all of you, we present the first blog of the seires
'Flowers of Shiraz' on Rajnigandha or Tuberose.
This blog is written by Namita Sachan. She has shared a beautiful poem on 'rajnigandha' penned by Hindi poet Kaashi Prasad Kheria.
She wrote a four-line poem on how the beloved remembers her lover
when fragrance of rajnigandha fills the misty nights.
I think she was missing Mr Iyer ;))
Over to Namita:

Doesn’t Rajnigandha remind you of the many romantic film scenes
capturing newly wed couples sitting on a decorated bed?
The bride, donning a bright bridal saree and heaps of jewellery
would wait for the bridegroom… the camera is focused on the bed,
decorated well with tuberoses and roses…
The bridegroom may come and lift the ‘ghunghat’ or
keep the new bride waiting, spending the night
with a notch girl or a wamp or his girlfriend…
depending upon the demand of the script :)
Rajnigandha seems to adds romance to the night.
No wonder it is widely used in floral arrangements.

Rajnigandha means ‘the fragrance of the night’.
The flowers are pure white in colour but the unopened buds are pinkish.
Rajnigandha has an intense and magical scent.
Rajanigandha in English is tuberose. In Urdu it is called Gul Shabbi,
Gulcheri in Marathi; in Kannada it is called Sukandaraji,
Nelasampengi in Telugu and Nila Sampangi in Tamil.
Its botanical name is Polianthes Tuberosa.

We’d love to know its other names, in other Indian languages.
A lot would have been penned by poets in regional languages also.
You are welcome to provide related inputs.
If the brilliance and beauty of a flower has delighted you,

It is difficult to compose matter in Hindi. Thanks for sending me the Hindi draft. I am still not comfortable typing Hindi. I am trying to draw inspiration from you.... When it comes to fragrance, Rajnigandha is my most favourite.. I just love it. As you said.... the smell is "heavenly". Thanks for sharing the beautiful memory of adorning the statue of the Flute Player with the fragrant flowers... an inexplicable experience.
The movie was nice... and the song is so sweet. Namita ji has described the flower so well. I am glad that you liked the blog. I know you have been busy and have not been on sulekha for a while... I appreciate your visit and comment. Cheers :))

Dear Dr Kamath
Thanks for the appreciation. We were almost sure that all of you would love the title track of Rajnigandha... Namita ji introduced it so well in the blog.
I am glad that you liked the blog. We would soon come up with a write-up on Rose that happens to be your favourite. There are many ref to 'gulab' in film songs... like gulabi aankhen, chehra gulab sa.... Do suggest a song on roses, if you can?
Cheers and Regards.
