Over decades many generations have immersed themselves in the beautiful melodies and enthralling music created by legendry music director Madan Mohan Kohli, popularly known as Madan Mohan.

Despite being one of the most talented music composers of his times, Madan Mohan did not get recognition, credit and fame he deserved. In his career spanning 25 years he composed music for barely a hundred movies of which just ten-twelve movies did well at the box office. When he started working, most of the heroes of his times (including Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar) had already paired with specific banners or composers, leaving little scope for a newcomer like him.

His father was a partner in the Bombay Talkies and Filmistan studio. At the behest of his father, he joined the NDA, Dehradun. But music was his first love. He left NDA to join the All India Radio, Lucknow.  He came in contact with ghazal singers and classical luminaries like Begum Akhtar, Talat Mahmood, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Ustad Faiyyaz Khan. Their influence is reflected in his compositions and creations, especially his ghazals.

His long and fruitful association with Lata Mangeshkar began with film Ada in 1951. The Lata- Madan duo gave the Hindi film industry some of the most memorable songs in the 50s, 60s and the 70s.  Film Bhai Bhai(1956) is was his first major hit but the music of films Dekh Kabira Roya (1957) and Adalat (1958) proved that Madan Mohan was a class apart.

After the huge success of the songs ‘Aap Ki Nazron Ne Sanjha’ and ‘Hai Isi Mein Pyar Ki Aabru’ from film Anpadh earned him the sobriquet King of Ghazals. After listening to 'Aap Ki Nazron Ne’ maestro Naushad is reported to have said: “Let me have this ghazal and take all my compositions in return.”

His favourite lyricists were Raja Mehandi Ali Khan, Kaifi Azmi, Rajendra Krishan, Sahir Ludhianvi and Mazrooh Sultanpuri. Madan Mohan yearned for lyrical perfection and excellence in his music composition that became milestones of sorts. He was largely criticized for making music to suit female voice, especially of Lata. But the success of his compositions sung by the topmost playback singers of his times -- Talat Mahmood, Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar, and Manna Dey proved his expertise and versatility. In fact, Madan Mohan’s composition 'Hoke Majboor Mujhe' from film Haqeeqat is rare coz it brought together four male playback singers – Bhupinder, Mohd Rafi, Talat Mahmood and Manna Dey.

Madan Mohan  bagged his only award – a National Award for composing music for film Dastak. He sang ‘Maai Ri Main Kaase Kahun’ which is my personal fav. Lata sang the other version of this song and the memorable ‘Baiyan Na Dharo O Balma’ making it a milestone movie of Madan Mohan’s career.

It is ironic that during his lifetime, Madan Mohan did not get as much recognition and praise as he expected (and he well deserved). He started drinking heavily and died of some liver ailment on July14, 1975. His musical compositions are a class apart and prove that Madan Mohan was an exceptionally gifted and talented composer. His songs would keep alive his memory in the minds and heart of lover of his music.
