Mile Sur Mera Tumhara

The song 'Mile Sur Mera Tumhara' was created by Lok Seva Sanchar Parishad and was promoted through Doordarshan (then India's only TV broadcaster). With National Integration as its theme, the song aimed at instilling in Indians a sense of brotherhood, unity, and pride.

The line "Mile Sur Mera Tumhara, To Sur Bane Hamara" means"If You and I sings the same tune, then the tune becomes ours (thus making us indistinguishable, unite us and make us one). From Gujarat to Assam, from Jammu & Kashmir to Kerala, the video beautifully captured the many moods of India and the Indians (from different walks of life singing/miming in the language represented by their state, region or community). The song ends with school children dressed in Saffron White and Green, gathered together to make the Indian Tricolour, as the tune of the National Anthem fades in.

MU is sure most of you would identify the famous faces featured in the video including singers Pt Bhimsen Joshi, Dr Balamuralikrishnan, Lata Mangeshkar; sports persons Narendra Hirwani, Venkataraghavan, Prakash Padukone and film stars Shabana Azmi, Sharmila Tagore, Hema Malini, Waheeda Rehman, Tanuja, Amitabh Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty and Jitendra. Interestingly, you can also identify the cast of the teleserial 'Tamas' that was on air then. Enjoy the clip!

(P.S.  As kids we used to try hard to grasp the lines sung in different languages, and sing the song with friends. It is sad that such a wonderful video clip is not being promoted now, neither by Doordarshan, nor through a tie-up with popular television channels. Do the children and youth of today not need such inspiring messages on National Integration, through a song/vidoe as captivating as this??, wonders MU)
Kindly bear with the poor video quality. MU couldn't find anything better than this.
